Relationship management

Relationship management is the ability to use what you read in yourself and others to communicate, resolve conflict, repair harm and lead. In The 10P Emotional Literacy System it is the fourth quadrant and belongs to the intelligence half. Its question: "How do we move forward?"

Core skills

  • Expressing feelings clearly without blame — see I-statements and Emotional expression.
  • Listening to understand rather than to respond.
  • De-escalating conflict — lowering the temperature before solving the problem.
  • Repairing after harm — see Repair conversation.
  • Setting boundaries that protect the relationship and yourself.
  • Leading — helping a group feel safe enough to be honest.

What breaks relationships

Relationship researcher John Gottman identified four communication patterns that predict relationship breakdown: criticism, contempt, defensiveness and stonewalling.1 Each is, at root, an emotional-literacy failure — a feeling expressed as an attack or a wall instead of as information.

Repair and restorative justice

10P treats repair as the highest relationship skill. It is also the final step of overcoming criminality in the Theory of Emotional Illiteracy-Based Criminality (TEIBC): restorative justice — repairing harm done — is how a person reconnects with community after causing hurt.
