About
About the encyclopedia
A free, open reference on emotional literacy, written by people who teach it every week and checked against published research.
The Emotional Literacy Encyclopedia is a free reference on what emotional literacy is, how it works and how to practice it. It is published by the 10P Program in Los Angeles and edited by its founder, Samual Nathaniel Brown.
Who we are
The 10P Program began in 2014 at New Folsom, a maximum-security California prison, as a curriculum written by a man serving a life sentence for the men around him. Today 10P teaches The 10P Emotional Literacy System to people inside and coming home, youth, families, athletes, people with disabilities, organizations and community circles across California.
Our editor's work rests on three kinds of knowledge: lived experience (24 years inside California prisons), self-directed and formal study (an autodidact who earned college degrees with honors from inside), and more than a decade in the field teaching emotional literacy in prisons, classrooms, locker rooms and living rooms.
Our point of view
We are not neutral about one thing: no one is born bad. The Theory of Emotional Illiteracy-Based Criminality (TEIBC), developed by our editor, shapes how we write about behavior, trauma and change. Where an entry presents 10P's framework, it says so. Where it presents research, it cites it.
Editorial standards
- Cite research. Factual claims about psychology and neuroscience link to peer-reviewed sources or primary institutions.
- Separate theory from evidence. We label 10P's theories as theories and note where evidence is still developing.
- Plain language. Every entry should be readable by a teenager and useful to a professional.
- People-first language. We say carceral scholars, people who are incarcerated and returning citizens.
- Not a substitute for care. This encyclopedia is educational. In a crisis in the U.S., call or text 988.
