THE BRAIN Project — Transforming Hearts Empowering Brilliance Resilience And Insightful Neural-growth — is the 10P Program's independent-study curriculum. It delivers self-paced emotional-literacy courses, in print or on prison tablets, to individuals and groups inside California prisons.1
It was designed for people traditional programming fails to reach: those in administrative segregation and restrictive housing, in behavioral-health and mental-health units, and those not yet ready for group circles.3 Participants read, answer written reflection questions, and return their work; completed courses earn a Certificate of Completion and a Letter of Recognition that can be placed in a person's file for the parole board.2

Course C1
The first course introduces the Theory of Emotional Illiteracy-Based Criminality (TEIBC) through excerpts from Samual Nathaniel Brown's 2018 book, including his account of the parole-board evaluation that led to it. It covers the theory's classification as an ethnographic criminogenic supposition; its foundations in Adverse Childhood Experiences, social ecology, cognitive behavioral therapy and strain theory; constructive and destructive Coping mechanisms; a seven-step path for overcoming criminality; and the neuroscience of change. Twenty-five reflection questions ask participants to apply the theory to their own lives.2
The course closes with Brown's message to the reader: "The core of criminality and being antisocial is emotional illiteracy. The goal of rehabilitation and the core of prosocial thinking and behavior is emotional literacy. You can do it."2
Reach
According to 10P, THE BRAIN Project has reached people in 20 of California's 33 state prisons, and the program is recognized by the Board of Parole Hearings for strengthening reading, writing, goal-setting and parole preparation.3 Sponsors can fund courses for people inside through 10P.
