Self-management

Quadrant two. The intelligence half, turned inward: "What can I do with it?"

Self-management is the ability to choose the right tool for a feeling and use it. In The 10P Emotional Literacy System it is the second quadrant and belongs to the intelligence half — responding. Its question: "What can I do with it?"

Choosing the right tool

Self-management is not suppression. The goal is not to make a feeling disappear but to respond to it in a way that fits the feeling, its intensity and the situation. 10P teaches it as tool selection:

If the feeling is… At this intensity… A fitting tool
Anger, frustration High (7–10) The pause, leave the room, move your body
Anxiety, dread Any Long-exhale breathing
Sadness, grief Any Talk to someone, write it out (Feelings journal)
Shame High Self-compassion, then a trusted person
Overwhelm High Shrink the task; one next step

The tool only works if the reading is right. That is why self-management depends on Self-awareness.

Replacing destructive coping

Everyone already self-manages — the question is how. Drinking, spending, raging and isolating are all forms of self-management that work in the short term and cost in the long term. The Theory of Emotional Illiteracy-Based Criminality (TEIBC) treats even criminality this way. Building self-management means replacing those Coping mechanisms with constructive ones and practicing until the new tool is the automatic one.

The evidence

Slow breathing has measurable calming effects on the nervous system,1 and cognitive-behavioral skills — noticing thoughts and choosing different responses — reduce reoffending in justice-involved adults.2
