Eric "Maserati-E" Abercrombie is an American filmmaker, sound designer and educator, born in Oakland, California, and a lead facilitator of the 10P Program. He teaches emotional literacy and emotional intelligence to incarcerated men at California State Prison, Solano.21 His message, in his own framing, is that a person is not defined by their past circumstances.2
Learning the craft inside
Abercrombie learned sound design and film while he was incarcerated.2 He appears in Q Ball, the Emmy-nominated documentary about the San Quentin basketball team.1 Those skills went with him when he came home.
Media career
After returning home, Abercrombie co-hosted The Last Mile Radio on SiriusXM. He is now the sound designer and audio engineer for Uncuffed, a podcast produced inside Solano State Prison and San Quentin State Prison by the people who live there.2 In 2026 he spoke in the National Park Service's Formerly Incarcerated Speaker Series on Alcatraz Island, sharing his journey of transformation and the lessons he learned inside.2
Contribution to emotional literacy
Abercrombie joined 10P as a facilitator in 2025 and co-leads the program at CSP-Solano.2 There he teaches the 10P B.E.L.T. curriculum (Bridging Emotional Literacy and Transition) to men preparing for life after prison. He has also volunteered with 10P's family-integration sessions, which bring participants and their loved ones together around a shared emotional language.
He brings two things to the room: - Proof. He is living evidence of the idea at the center of the Theory of Emotional Illiteracy-Based Criminality (TEIBC): no one is born bad, and the person who walked in is not the only person they can become. - The ear of a storyteller. A sound designer listens for what is underneath, and emotional literacy asks participants to do the same with their own feelings: Read, Understand, Respond, Repeat.
His journey also illustrates the update at the heart of APEs: Adverse Prison Experiences. The skills built inside, used with intention, can become a career and a calling.
