Hopelessness

noun

The belief that things will not get better and nothing you do will make a difference.

How it shows up in the body

Deep fatigue, flatness, withdrawal, trouble getting up or starting anything.

What it is telling you

You are carrying more than one person should carry alone. Hopelessness is a feeling, not a forecast — and it is a signal to reach out.

The urge — and the choice

To give up or disappear. The choice is to tell one person today. If you are thinking about ending your life, call or text 988 in the U.S.

One thing to try

Name one thing that would make tomorrow one percent better, and one person who could help with it.

Practice it: The pause.

Words you can use

I’m in a really dark place and I don’t know how to get out. I need help.
